Shin Chan: The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers vs Chainsaw Man Reze Arc: Anime movies have entered the Indian market recently. Last Friday also saw the clash between two popular anime movies, Shin Chan The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers in India and Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc. A quirky family-comedy that banks on nostalgia vs. gritty-action clash popular among the youth, both movies held their India premiere on September 26th, shortly after their release in Japan. Amid popular Hollywood releases like One Battle After Another, their simultaneous release highlights anime's growing demand in India.
Directed by Masakazu Hashimoto, this 33rd Crayon Shin-chan film transports Shinnosuke Nohara and the Kasukabe Guard to India for a dance competition. A cursed "nose" backpack possesses Bo-chan, unleashing tyrannical chaos amid Bollywood-inspired antics. Dubbed in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Japanese by PVR Inox Pictures, it leverages Shinchan's two-decade Hungama TV fandom.
MAPPA's Tatsuya Yoshihara adaptation dives into Tatsuki Fujimoto's dark arc, where Denji's café's flirtation with Reze spirals into betrayal and devilish gore. Voiced by Kikunosuke Toya (Denji) and Reina Ueda (Reze), it's in Japanese with Hindi dubs via Sony Pictures, screened in IMAX for thrills.

Shin Chan opened to a strong box office collection of ₹0.58 crore, according to reports published by Sacnilk. It sold an additional ₹79 lakh of tickets on day 2, taking the movie's total to ₹1.37 crore at the end of day 2.
On the other side, the Chainsaw Man Reze Arc movie did ₹50 lakh in its first day of sales. It added another ₹74 lakh to its total on day 2, showing a healthy jump in occupancy on its first Saturday. The film sits at a box office total of ₹1.24 crore at the end of day 2.
In comparison, both movies show similar collections at the end of their second ay 2 at Indian theatres. Although their numbers don't compare to the box office monster Demon Slayer Infinity Castle movie, which had collected an estimated ₹25 crores in two days.
Shinchan movie received praise for its nostalgia, comedy scenes, and its portrayal of India. Fans also call it a fun watch, with some sharing their criticisms of the musical genre. Overall, the movie has received mixed reviews from the audience.
Chainsaw Man Reze Arc movie attracted overwhelmingly positive response from theatres. One fan on X called it "ABSOLUTE CINEMA" and praised its music and storytelling.
Shinchan's multigenerational nostalgia trumps Chainsaw's comparatively niche fanbase. Despite this, the box office performances of both movies show a major shift in anime culture in India.
