Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was sentenced to more than four years in prison on charges of prostitution-related offenses after he refused to present a defense, ending weeks of testimony and theatrical courtroom hearings. In a tearful address, Combs spoke directly to Indian-American Judge Arun Subramanian, asking for mercy and an opportunity to become a better man. He explained how he had lost his own self-respect and issued apologies for what he did.

Sean “Diddy” Combs’s Apology

In a final attempt at clemency, Combs apologized to pop singer Casandra Ventura and another woman, Jane, who had accused him of prolonged sexual and physical abuse. Much of his statement was spent reminiscing about the destruction of his family, his failures as a father, and the fall of his business empire and ruined reputation.

“Most of all, I lost my self-respect. I’ve been reduced to nothing,” he said. “I really am truly sorry for it all, no matter what they say.”

Sean Diddy Found Guilty

Combs was found guilty last July on two counts of hiring paid male escorts to cross state borders for sexual trysts fueled by drugs with his girlfriends, during which he allegedly made videos and had sex. He was acquitted of the more serious racketeering and sex trafficking charges, which put him at risk for a life sentence.

His children attended court and made emotional pleas on their father’s behalf. “We’re not here to justify any of his errors. But your honor, he’s still our dad, and we still need him in our lives,” his 18-year-old daughter, Jessie Combs, said.

He was found guilty on two counts of hiring male escorts to cross state lines to engage in drug-induced sex acts—often referred to as “freak offs” with Combs’ girlfriends while he videotaped and masturbated.

Indian-American Judge Arun Subramanian, who heard the case, stated the sentence served to express the seriousness of the offense as well as to serve as a deterrent.
