Mumbai: A major controversy has erupted in the Hindi film industry following actor Ranveer Singh’s reported exit from the much-anticipated Don 3, leading to a bitter dispute with filmmaker Farhan Akhtar and production house Excel Entertainment. The conflict has intensified after the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) issued a non-cooperation directive against the actor, creating uncertainty around his future projects and raising broader questions about accountability and contractual commitments in Bollywood.
The controversy stems from Singh’s withdrawal from Don 3, a film that was expected to mark a new chapter in one of Bollywood’s most celebrated action franchises. When the actor was announced as the new face of the franchise in 2023, expectations were high, given the legacy established by Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. However, after a prolonged period without significant progress updates, reports of creative differences and production-related disagreements between Singh and the makers began surfacing. According to industry sources, issues related to script revisions, production delays, and differing perspectives on the character’s portrayal eventually contributed to the breakdown of the collaboration.
Farhan Akhtar subsequently approached FWICE, alleging that the actor exited the project at a critical stage when extensive planning and financial commitments had already been made. The filmmaker reportedly submitted a detailed account of the production timeline and argued that the withdrawal disrupted schedules, affected long-term planning, and caused substantial financial losses. Akhtar maintained that such last-minute departures could set a damaging precedent for the industry and undermine professional and contractual obligations.
FWICE’s action appears to have been influenced not only by the withdrawal itself but also by the actor’s alleged lack of response to repeated notices sent by the federation. According to officials, several attempts were made to initiate dialogue and mediation before the organisation decided to proceed with a non-cooperation directive. The move effectively discourages the federation’s large network of technicians and workers from collaborating with the actor until the dispute is resolved.
While Ranveer Singh has not personally addressed the matter, a statement issued through his representatives described the dispute as contractual and financial in nature. The actor’s team emphasised his respect for the film fraternity and maintained that his silence was intended to preserve professional relationships and handle the situation with dignity.
The financial implications of the dispute are equally significant. Reports suggest that Excel Entertainment is seeking compensation of approximately ₹45 crore, citing investments already made in pre-production activities, including location scouting, bookings, and other project-related expenditures. Although there are indications that the actor may return his reported signing amount, negotiations and discussions remain ongoing.
The controversy has divided industry opinion, with some supporting the need for stronger professional accountability while others argue that actors should retain the freedom to step away from projects that no longer align with their creative vision. Meanwhile, the future of Don 3 remains uncertain as the makers begin the challenging process of finding a new lead actor capable of carrying forward one of Bollywood’s most iconic franchises.
