The latest episode of Netflix’s comedy variety show The Great Indian Kapil Show turned into an interesting mix of laughter and inspiration. Host Kapil Sharma invited some of India’s most successful startup founders, including boAt’s Aman Gupta, Mamaearth’s Ghazal Alagh, Oyo’s Ritesh Agarwal, and PayTM’s Vijay Shekhar Sharma.
The episode was filled with humor, and it also gave viewers a glimpse into the personal lives and struggles of these entrepreneurs.
How Much Money Is Enough?
The host of the show, Kapil Sharma, asked a simple but relatable question to Vijay Shekhar Sharma, PayTM founder. Kappil asked him, “Zindagi jeene ke liye aapko kya lagta hai? Kitna paisa kaafi hota hai?” (What do you think is enough money to live life?).
Vijay replied with honesty, “Zindagi jeene ke liye toh mujhe lagta hai ki genuinely jitna aapko khana peena aur normal kapde ke liye hota hai, matlab ₹1-2 lakh mahine se zyada kya zindagi ki zaroorat hai.”
Kapil quickly added a hilarious twist, saying, “Toh utna rakh ke aap baaki humhe Paytm kar denge.” His witty comment left the audience in splits.
The Birth of PayTM
Kapil also asked Vijay how the idea of PayTM came into his mind. The host joked, “Vijay bhai aapke pyajame pe bhi chhuriyan chali thi. Kya hai? Kaise aaya PayTM ka idea aapke dimag mein?” (Was there some struggle that led to PayTM’s invention?).

Vijay explained that the idea came from his own real-life experience. He said, “Actually, main kuch aisa hua ki main international travel karne ke liye land kar gaya aur mera wallet reh gaya Delhi ke lounge mein aur main wahan pe phone ke saath hoon. Toh mujhe laga ki saari ki saari pockets mein wallet ke saath-saath phone hota hai aur log phone ko zyada use karte hain toh wallet ko phone mein merge karna.”
This moment of necessity gave rise to the idea of turning the phone into a digital wallet — and eventually, PayTM.
Inspiration With Entertainment
More than merely a comedy, this episode demonstrated how India’s top businesspeople strike a balance between simplicity and success. Vijay’s response regarding his “ideal salary” was notable for its practicality, demonstrating that even though he is the CEO of one of the largest businesses in India, he still thinks there aren’t many real needs.
At the same time, his PayTM story highlighted how real-life problems can lead to game-changing innovations.
