The passport stamps are piling up for television’s most mischievous vacationers. According to a report from Deadline, creator Mike White and HBO have “zeroed in” on France as the destination for the highly anticipated fourth season of the Emmy-winning anthology series, The White Lotus. While the exact city remains a mystery, the choice promises a new backdrop of luxury, scandal, and the series' signature dark comedy, moving the drama from the spiritual retreats of Thailand to the heart of European sophistication.

Where in France Could It Be Filmed?

The series has a established partnership with the Four Seasons hotel chain, which doubles as the fictional White Lotus resorts. Strong hints about the possible setting can be found in this history. There are three renowned Four Seasons hotels in France, each with its own vibe:

  • The French Riviera: The Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, a legendary palace of glamour and old-world wealth overlooking the Mediterranean.
  • The Alps: The Four Seasons Megève, a luxurious chalet-style resort perfect for a winter-themed season of intrigue.
  • Paris: The iconic Hotel George V, an art-deco masterpiece steps from the Champs-Élysées, offering an urban playground for misbehaving elites.

Another straightforward issue that might influence the decision is the weather. Executive producer David Bernad recently revealed that “Mike doesn’t like the cold,” potentially ruling out a snowy Alpine setting and making the sun-drenched Riviera a frontrunner.

What Has Mike White Said About the Future?

While HBO executives have remained coy, only hinting that a European locale was likely, Mike White has playfully teased the series' future. In a past interview, he stated his desire to move away from the “crashing waves against rocks” vernacular, making a landlocked or urban French location a strong possibility.

Most tellingly, he has grand ambitions for the anthology, expressing a desire to film on every continent. “My dream would be to hit every continent,” White said at a festival in 2023, specifically naming Australia as a future possibility. France marks the next step in this global tour of luxury and moral decay.

What Can We Expect From a French Season?

Each season of The White Lotus uses its location to explore specific themes. Hawaii examined privilege and colonialism, Italy delved into sexuality and infidelity, and Thailand focused on spirituality and enlightenment.

A French season provides fertile ground. The setting could explore themes of haute couture and superficiality, the clash of American tourists with Parisian elitism, or the dark secrets lurking within centuries-old chateaus. White himself stated that there is "always room for further killings at the White Lotus hotels" and that the program is about "identity and desire." There will undoubtedly be outrage wherever the opulent yacht docks next.
