Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, shared the straightforward yet effective custom she employs to bond with her young children on a recent livestream that provided a unique and intimate look into her family's life in Montecito. During a conversation with author Courtney Adamo for Godmothers Bookstore on Wednesday, October 23, Meghan revealed the "rose and thorn" practice that helps her understand the highs and lows of Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet's days.

The Meaning Behind "Rose and Thorn"

So, what exactly is this "rose and thorn" ritual? The Duchess clarified that it is a conversation starter that she uses every day during supper to get her kids to respond with more than one word. The "rose" represents the high point of their day, while the "thorn" represents an issue or something that upset them. With this method, the children can communicate their feelings and experiences in a structured but adaptable way."With young children, it's a great opener for when you get to that stage where your kids just give you a yes or no answer," Meghan told Adamo, as reported by People magazine.

Lilibet's "Blast" of a Day

The practice seems to be yielding delightful results, especially with four-year-old Princess Lilibet. Meghan shared an anecdote that highlights her daughter's vibrant character. When asked about her rose and thorn, Lilibet’s response was overwhelmingly positive. "She's in this moment where I say, 'What's your rose and your thorn?' And she goes, 'My day was just a blast,'" the Duchess recounted. Lilibet has a "really strong personality" for her age, she continued, adding with affection, "She's incredible."

A Peek into Morning Routines and Comforting Rituals

Beyond the evening check-in, Meghan also touched upon her private morning routine and other parenting comforts. She shared that the "first thing I do when I wake up in the morning" is turn on music, setting the tone for the day ahead. Furthermore, she revealed a tender method for soothing her children when they are unwell.

By saying she comforts Archie or Lili with a “healing blanket,” the Duchess showed that their home mixes stability with kindness and warmth.

Preserving Memories for the Future

The Duchess’s thoughtful approach to parenting extends to preserving memories for her children’s future. In a separate podcast interview with Jamie Kern Lima, Meghan disclosed that she is creating a digital "time capsule" for Archie and Lilibet. She sends photographs and daily anecdotes to private email addresses she has created for each of them. This modern-day keepsake, compiled through emails sent almost every night, is a gift they will be able to access once they turn 16, a treasure trove of personal history from their mother.
