In the latest debate over live-in relationships, spiritual leader Aniruddhacharya has made some very critical remarks. The issue made big headlines when the spiritual leader stated that women over 25 years of age do not have any moral values if they are living together.
Khushboo Patani, sister of Disha Patani, openly condemned the statements, calling them offensive and regressive. Adding fuel to the fire, actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut shared her views on the entire subject.
Kangana’s Take on Live-in Relationships
Kangana’s interview with Hauter fly expressed her skepticism about live-in relationships, calling them “not women friendly.” She argued that the institution of marriage brings a kind of security and obligation that a live-in relationship does not offer. According to her, marriage traditionally has loyalty associated with it, but lives have women at the mercy of vulnerability.

Most importantly, Kangana raised concerns about the practicalities of lives, specifically, when a woman gets pregnant. “When you are in a live-in, and pregnancy occurs, who takes responsibility? These arrangements don’t protect the women like marriage does,” she added while informing the young girls as an “elder sister.”
Legal Vs Social Approval
When asked whether live-in relationships are illegal, Kangana accepted that courts regard them as legal. However, she stated: “Legality does not mean safety.”
The Indians have always remained in this grey area about why live-in relationships even exist, amidst all research and surveys that show that a man would often compartmentalize relationships and separate emotional from physical, unlike women. “Men may not change post-living with a partner, but women feel the same way emotionally as they would feel in a marriage,” she argued.
Backdrop of the Debate
This controversy started because Khushboo Patani slammed the derogatory remarks made by Aniruddh Acharya stating that live-in women are promiscuous.

The public anger that followed forced the spiritual leader to issue an apology clarifying that he meant “some women, not all.” His comments have left a deep imprint in the debate regarding morality, choice, and perception on society towards relationships.
A Bigger Debate on Gender and Choice
Kangana’s comments have sparked up conversation with some who have the same traditional views, renewed conversation on women autonomy and how society judge’s relationships. This clash of opinions-from Khushboo Patani’s directly opposing misogyny to Kangana’s caution about protecting women-indicates that India is still divided in the way modern relationships are interpreted in the folds of culture and morality.
It clearly involves a much larger discourse balancing changing personal choices with societal expectations, keeping the dignity and agency of women upright.
