Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh's remarkable global ascent has reached a new pinnacle with a nomination for the 2025 International Emmy Awards. The actor-singer has been recognized in the Best Performance by an Actor category for his powerful portrayal of the legendary singer Amar Singh Chamkila in Imtiaz Ali's biopic.
At a critical juncture for Indian cinema globally, the film itself has also been nominated for Best TV Movie/Mini-Series.
Diljit Dosanjh has been nominated in the prestigious Best Performance by an Actor category. He finds himself in esteemed company, competing against international talents like David Mitchell for Ludwig, Oriol Pla for Yo, Adicto, and Diego Vasquez for One Hundred Years of Solitude. Furthermore, Amar Singh Chamkila has been nominated in the Best TV Movie/Mini-Series category. The nominations were announced by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which unveiled 64 nominees across 16 categories.
An overjoyed Diljit Dosanjh shared the credit with the film's director on his Instagram stories after the news was made. He posted a heartfelt message of gratitude, writing, “It’s all because of Imtiaz Ali sir @netflix_in”. This recognition demonstrates the teamwork that went into the highly regarded project, which debuted on Netflix on April 12, 2024.
The nomination recognizes Dosanjh's compelling performance as the controversial and renowned Punjabi folk artist Amar Singh Chamkila. Chamkila, dubbed the "Elvis of Punjab," rose to fame in the 1980s thanks to her lyrics, which boldly addressed themes of love, rebellion, and societal change. His extraordinary, controversy-strewn life ended tragically in 1988 when he and his wife, singer Amarjot (portrayed by Parineeti Chopra), were assassinated at 27. The film charts this tragic path, giving Dosanjh a complex and demanding role.
This dual nomination reflects the growing international recognition of Indian content. Indian productions have made waves recently—Delhi Crime won Best Drama Series in 2020, and Vir Das took home an Emmy in 2021 for his Netflix special Vir Das: For India. Dosanjh's nomination highlights the rising popularity and caliber of Indian storytelling and performances abroad, especially on international streaming services like Netflix.
