The actor challenges the stereotype that India only welcomes a particular type of actress, “that’s not true,” she says. “Of course, we want to see a certain kind of hero or heroine, but people love good films—be it commercial or content-driven."

Formulas Don’t Work; Authenticity Does

While the industry may still push formulas, Huma believes they rarely succeed, “formulas don’t work, which is why many films fail,” she says. “Whenever something new and honest comes along, audiences lap it up.”

She points out how her varied roles—from romantic leads to political dramas—prove that freshness connects better with viewers. Her upcoming film Bayan only adds to her reputation as an actor unafraid to take risks.

Despite her content-driven approach, Huma also embraces mainstream Bollywood elements, “I love singing, dancing, and playing the quintessential heroine too,” she adds. “There are films where I’m the central character, and I lead the call sheet.”
