The launch of the trailer for The Bengal Files, which is going to be his next movie, again brings Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri in the public eye of cinema at Kolkata, where it has already created rattling conversations.

Known for producing films around igniting conversations on history, politics and collective memory, Agnihotri has created a unique space for himself. His work has a lot of controversies, but each new offering captures its audience and stimulates engagement with questions that are uncomfortable.

Revisiting the Mystery of Lal Bahadur Shastri

Agnihotri’s travel to political cinema started with the film, The Tashkent Files. That is, within a few days after signing the Tashkent Agreement, India had this mysterious death of the second Prime Minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri.

The film blurred the line between fact and speculation on the most lifeblood question as to whether Shastri’s death was natural or by intrigue. With its storytelling along untold narratives, it set the mood for what would become the Agnihotri style-cinema that demands debate.

Global Impact of The Kashmir Files

If The Tashkent Files unearthed curiosity: The Kashmir Files hit a far deeper resonance. Released in 2022, the film recounted the agony-torn exodus of Kashmiri Pandits during the insurgency of the 1990s. It aimed to articulate a community often unheard by the mainstream, as the film scribed its survival accounts.

Meanwhile, Anupam Kher’s impressively powerful portrayal earned an avalanche of applause, while the film itself reverberated far beyond the geographical boundaries of India. For many, it became something more than cinema-it became a reminder of stories left untold, histories yet to be acknowledged.

Bengal Files: A Bold New Chapter

Now it’s time for Agnihotri to switch to a third unfortunate episode out of Sankar’s The Bengal Files: The Right to Life. The film is supposed to analyze intensely how people along with their cultures underwent the division of India and Pakistan, as well as West Bengal from East Bengal (now Bangladesh), following a religious division of cultural heritage.

Dubbed as his “boldest film yet”, it aims to re-examine aspects of identity, survival, and broken legacies.

Agnihotri’s Unfinished Project of Memory

The Tashkent Files, The Kashmir Files and the upcoming The Bengal Files are not merely movies; they are part of an unfolding trilogy, which puts forth uncomfortable truths before the audience.

The Bengal Files are slated for release on September 5, and it seems from this date, the filmmaker will not stop asking questions, provoking, and above all ensuring that history is neither forgotten nor kept clean.
