Officials stated that the banned platforms featured obscene material, in violation of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the IT Rules, 2021.
Following the Indian government's ban on 25 OTT sites such as ALTT and ULLU for streaming allegedly obscene and vulgar content, producer Ekta Kapoor came out with a strong public clarification. Posting on Instagram, she explained that she and her mother, Shobha Kapoor, have had no connection with ALTT since June 2021.
In her statement, Ekta Kapoor reinforced that Balaji Telefilms Limited is a publicly listed professional company and that it abides by all the regulations of the land.
Kapoor's statement given out was as follows, "Balaji Telefilms Limited, listed on the BSE and NSE, is a professionally run media organization and following the recent amalgamation of ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd. (previously its wholly owned subsidiary) duly approved by the Hon’ble NCLT, it operates ALTT wef June 20, 2025."
She went on to distance herself from the platform by declaring, "Media reports have been in circulation about ALTT being disabled by the authorities, however, contrary to such reports, Ms. Ekta Kapoor and Mrs. Shobha Kapoor are not associated in any capacity whatsoever with ALTT and they had stepped down from their association with ALTT way back in June 2021. Any insinuation contrary to the above facts is strongly denied and media is requested to report the accurate facts."
The statement ended with, "Balaji Telefilms Limited is fully compliant of all applicable laws and continues to operate its business with the highest standards of corporate governance."
She captioned the Instagram post, "To whomsoever it may concern."
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, along with the Ministries of Home, Women and Child Development, Electronics, Information Technology, and Law, and industry associations such as FICCI and CII, have blocked 25 OTT apps and sites. These platforms, like ALTT, ULLU, Big Shots App, Desiflix, etc., contained content with too many sexual innuendos and bold scenes that did not have any good storyline or social message.
Officials said that the prohibited platforms had obscene content, contrary to the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the IT Rules, 2021. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and concerned citizens had raised several complaints in the last year.
Action involves the issuance of warnings to several intermediaries to make sure access to the websites and applications is blocked in India.
While several platforms now face scrutiny, Ekta Kapoor’s statement clarifies her dissociation from ALTT well before the current crackdown, requesting media to avoid spreading misinformation.
