With four days still left for the film's release, Rajinikanth's much-awaited film Coolie has already set box office records with advance ticket sales.

The booking window opened internationally first, and increased sales are anticipated in India as the release date approaches. On a worldwide level, Coolie has grossed more than ₹50 crore so far, with advance bookings alone-a phenomenally large figure expected to double once the movie is released.

Star-studded pan-India appeal

The whole industry is abuzz with Coolie, which is being directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, since the movie has appeal in multiple languages. Besides Rajinikanth, the film also stars Nagarjuna, Upendra, and Shruti Haasan, whereas Aamir Khan does a special cameo in an attempt to woo pan-India audiences.

Ticket sales internationally have already crossed $5 million, which translates to ₹42 crore; this is a sign of a very strong overseas demand, as per industry sources.

Breakneck speed in domestic pre-sales

Since Friday's staggered ticket release in India, the sales have seen a frenzy. By Sunday morning, it had collected ₹14 crore from advance booking, of which ₹10 crore was just for the opening day shows.

The Tamil version is leading with almost ₹10 crore in advance sales, followed by those from the Telugu and Kannada versions, which are also showing promising numbers. Although it has not had the best release for the Hindi dubbed version, the latter is expected to pick up soon.

Going Past Previous Rajinikanth Films

Coolie is likely to break Rajinikanth's previous advance booking record. The film has already surpassed Jailer, which earned ₹18 crore in domestic pre-sales, but the all-time high remains that of Leo-pushback now being the benchmark to beat-at ₹46 crore.

The ₹14 crore of pre-release bookings in India is already beyond the lifetime earnings of other prominent Hindi flicks such as Emergency and is higher than the overseas tally of Tamil films like Kamal Haasan's Thug Life. Domestic collections continue to swell and will probably equal or exceed that of previous blockbusters by the release date.

Outlook: A Historic Opening

At the current rate, Coolie is surely going to be one of the biggest movie openings for an Indian film and probably the most successful debut for Rajinikanth ever.

A mix of a superstar cast, a pan-Indian story and strong international interest have already made Coolie a box-office hit before the public lay's eyes on the film.
