The Boston concert of Coldplay that suddenly caught the attention of a corporate executive duo sparked a debate that extended far beyond the audience of the music. Andy Byron, the previous Astronomer CEO and Kristin Cabot, the head of HR of that company, found themselves on the giant screen of the arena during the segment of the song being played on Jumbotron.
Their awkward response, mixed with a cmment by Chris Martin that “they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy,” left social media raging. Within days, that viral clip sparked an internal investigation that ended with both of the executives resigning from their positions. What was apparently intended to be a joke turned into a big drama.
“This is not, never will be and never was a kiss cam,” the frontman told fans during the band’s Music of the Spheres tour stop in England, recently….”
“This is not, never will be, and never was: a kiss cam!! It drives me f*cking bananas!” 🤣😅

Chris Martin Clears the Air
For Chris Martin, addressing fans in England during Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour, the matter was clear-cut bringing that part to stay. “This is not, never was, and never will be a kiss cam,” noted that the intention of the band was just to relate to the audience.
Martin said that the episode from Boston developed into a massive scandal, but he brushed it off as an exception, not the rule. For him, it is about celebrating an audience, not causing awkwardness; therefore, his defence was candid enough to reveal both frustration with not being understood and a determination to continue connecting with fans in a spontaneous way.
Reason of Jumbotron
It was in Singapore that Coldplay began the act last year when they would improvise lyrics about fans whose faces showed up on the screen. From that playful crowd engagement, the segment developed into a signature aspect of their concerts, acting to break down the barrier separating performer from audience, reinforcing the intimacy of live music in a time where stadium shows could otherwise feel dispassionate.

For Martin, creating that moment as constant means smoldering that spark of unpredictability and joy even if there are times when it misfires.
A Lesson in Public Spectacle
It shows how public exposure can be both boon and bane. While most fans enjoy the occasional moment that they themselves get sucked into the show, also few relish the glare of the lights. This is especially true in an age when seconds can become the stuff of global news overnight. Martin also realizes that the very humorous admonition “If you aren’t secured to be on an international news, please duck” is true but does affirm the essence of Coldplay which is pure love in their performances.
Coldplay’s Jumbotron Song is hardly going to be cut anytime soon. Even though there was a mishap in Boston, Martin sees it as an essential part of their live signature as a band. Talking about life well described, there may be lemons thrown at Coldplay, those lemons are always turned to music, and sometimes, much to their surprise, into very viral moments.
