Director Anurag Basu has put all speculation to rest regarding his upcoming romantic musical featuring Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela. Amid rumours that the film was delayed due to similarities with the blockbuster Saiyaara, Basu has clarified that the postponement has nothing to do with comparisons and everything to do with schedules.
It’s Just a Scheduling Clash”
In a recent statement, Basu explained that the delay is purely logistical. Kartik Aaryan has been busy wrapping up work on another film, while Basu himself has been occupied with promotions for his last release. The film is around 50% complete, and both the actor and director are looking to resume shooting soon. “We hope to finish it in one go and announce the title shortly,” he shared.
Not Aashiqui 3, Not Saiyaara
The upcoming film had sparked buzz as a possible Aashiqui 3 reboot, but Basu clarified that legal issues regarding the Aashiqui title have prevented any confirmation on that front. While it may feature a revamped version of the original title track, the film stands on its own and is not connected to Saiyaara or any other recent romantic musicals.
Yes, both stories involve musicians and heartbreak, but that doesn’t mean they’re the same,” Basu noted. He admitted that such thematic overlaps are inevitable in Bollywood, especially in love stories, but stressed that his film is driven by a completely different emotional core.
A Fresh Pairing & High Expectations
The film pairs Kartik Aaryan with South Indian star Sreeleela for the first time, a casting choice that has generated plenty of excitement. Basu is known for his layered, emotionally rich storytelling, and this project is being pitched as a music-driven narrative with strong emotional weight.
Though originally planned for a Diwali 2025 release, the film is now likely to arrive in early 2026, giving the team ample time to polish the final product and avoid overlapping releases with other similar films.
Why It Still Matters
Even without a title, the film is making waves. Expectations are high because Kartik Aaryan is fresh off a number of successful films and Anurag Basu, who is known for telling emotionally charged stories like Barfi and Metro…, is at the lead. The director wants this movie to be unique not only in terms of its music and visuals but also in terms of its emotional impact.
“We are creating a significant piece. The wait will be worthwhile, Basu added, even though it might take some time.
