The trailer for “Emergency,” featuring Kangana Ranaut as the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has sparked significant interest. Alongside Ranaut, the film stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and Milind Soman. Released on August 14, the trailer offers a glimpse into the ‘darkest times of democratic India,’ showcasing a young Indira Gandhi’s relationship with her father, the late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and her navigation through wars, political unrest, and other challenges throughout her career. It hints at Gandhi’s life being portrayed as ‘a Shakespearean tragedy.’

The film’s release date has recently been updated. Initially postponed due to Kangana’s election campaign, the movie is now set to premiere on September 6, 2024. Following her victory in the Lok Sabha elections from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, Kangana announced the new release date with a poster.

Kangana Ranaut has described the film as a portrayal of a significant chapter in Indian political history. She commented, “I am deeply inspired by William Shakespeare’s Macbeth; the essence of Emergency is the destruction wrought when ambition goes unchecked by moral constraints. It is undoubtedly the most sensational chapter of Indian democracy and I am eagerly awaiting its worldwide release on 6th September 2024.”

In an interview with Variety, Kangana likened Indira Gandhi’s life to a Shakespearean tragedy, stating, “Her life was such a Shakespearean tragedy. It’s not for us to judge or evaluate. It is what it is. When people see the film, they will realize that it is such an honest take on the Emergency, what led to it, and what eventually came of it.”
