The political drama of Chandigarh Corporation elections continues. On the orders of the High Court, the administration’s new notification has postponed the election of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor in Chandigarh to 10 am on Tuesday. Meanwhile, while hearing the Congress petition, the Punjab-Haryana High Court ordered the administration to issue a fresh election notification considering all objections raised in the elections.
On the orders of the High Court, the Chandigarh Administration has issued a new notification regarding the election of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor. According to the notification, elections for Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held on March 4 from 10 am. Chandigarh’s new Mayor, Kuldeep Kumar, will be the presiding officer. At the same time, the process of nomination of candidates for the elections will also be done again. Candidates can file their nominations in the Municipal Corporation on February 28th and 29th from 11 am to 5 pm. Actually, due to three councilors of the Aam Aadmi Party joining the BJP, the BJP now has the majority in these elections.
In such a situation, the results may go in favor of the BJP. At present, the BJP has 18 votes, including 17 councilors and one MP. The Aam Aadmi Party has 10 councilors, and the Congress has 7 councilors. Overall, the alliance has 17 votes. Additionally, there is an Akali Dal councilor who voted for the BJP in the elections held on January 30. Let us tell you that after winning the Mayor election on January 30, BJP councilor and newly appointed Mayor Manoj Sonkar had conducted elections for Deputy Mayor and Senior Deputy Mayor. Rajinder Kumar had won the election for Deputy Mayor, and Kuljeet Sandhu of BJP had won the election for Senior Deputy Mayor. During this period, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party had boycotted the Deputy Mayor and Senior Deputy Mayor elections. While giving its verdict on the petition of the Aam Aadmi Party councilor, the Supreme Court had declared valid the 8 votes canceled by the presiding officer of Congress and BJP party and declared AAP’s Kuldeep Kumar as the mayor.
Nomination for Senior Deputy and Deputy Mayor: A fresh notice was issued by the Deputy Commissioner to conduct fresh elections to implement Para 44 of the Supreme Court judgment on February 20, 2024, in the Chandigarh Mayor case.
In the new notice, the date for filing nominations for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor has been fixed as February 28 and 29. Elections for both the posts will be held on March 4, 2024, at 10 am in MC House. The election will be conducted by the Mayor in Chair. During the elections on March 4, 2024, the same instructions given to the administration, municipal corporation, and police will be applicable to them as were applicable during the mayor elections held on January 30, 2024.
