In Mumbai’s Ghatkopar, a senior citizen lost Rs 7.53 lakh after attempting to contact what he believed was Amazon customer service. The elderly individual, who sought information about a mobile phone order for his wife, unwittingly disclosed sensitive bank and credit card details to a scammer posing as an Amazon executive.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when Ajay Singh, the complainant, aimed to inquire about the delivery status of a mobile phone purchased on Amazon. Searching for the Amazon customer service number on Google, Singh dialed the number displayed.
The person who answered claimed to be an Amazon delivery agent and informed Singh that the delivery would take a few more days. The caller also suggested canceling the order, to which Singh agreed. Subsequently, the scammer requested Singh’s Google Pay account details, assuring an instant refund. However, Singh soon realized he had been duped as Rs 7.53 lakh was fraudulently transferred from his account.
Upon discovering the scam, Singh promptly reported the incident to the Parksite police station, where an FIR was filed against unidentified perpetrators. Authorities warned about the growing trend of fraudsters manipulating phone numbers on Google listings to deceive unsuspecting victims. They emphasized the importance of verifying phone numbers associated with customer service, particularly those obtained from Google, before sharing any personal information.
