According to police, a head-on collision between a private bus and a mini truck in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri on Wednesday killed eight people and injured 14. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed his condolences for the accident and has directed officials to ensure that the injured are properly cared for.

“Chief Minister Shri @myogiadityanath Ji Maharaj has condoled the loss of lives due to road accident in Lakhimpur Kheri district,” the tweet by CM’s office read.

“Maharaj Ji has directed the senior officers to immediately go to the spot and conduct relief and rescue operations on a war footing and make proper arrangements for the treatment of the injured,” it added.

The bus was travelling from Dhaurhara to Lucknow when it collided with a mini truck travelling in the opposite direction on the Aira bridge on National Highway 730, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Pritam Pal Singh.

He believes the death toll will rise.

He said that after receiving the information, the police arrived on the scene and rescued the injured after cutting the bus with a gas cutter. The injured have been transported to the district hospital, and efforts are underway to identify the deceased, according to the DSP.

According to a state government spokesperson in Lucknow, the Chief Minister has expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished peace to the departed souls.

The spokesman added that orders have been issued to conduct relief work on a war footing.
