St Stephen’s College Challenges Delhi High Court’s Order on DU Seat Allocation for Admissions

St. Stephen’s College has filed an appeal against a Delhi High Court single-bench order granting admission to seven students based on Delhi University’s (DU) seat allocation policy. The appeal was brought before a Division Bench led by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, who agreed to hear the case on Tuesday.

The order in question was passed on Friday by Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma, stating that since DU’s seat allocation system had not been invalidated, the college must admit the students in line with the policy used in the previous academic year. The court directed the college to complete formalities and allow the students to attend classes.

This ruling arose from two petitions filed by the students, who argued that although DU had allocated them seats at St. Stephen’s, their admissions had not been finalized within the required timeframe. St. Stephen’s contested the university’s seat allocation, claiming it wasn’t obligated to admit all students under the system due to limited capacity.

Initially, the single-judge bench granted provisional admission to six students, recognizing their merit and compliance with requirements. However, the college’s appeal led to a Division Bench barring the students from attending classes until the matter is resolved. A seventh student later joined the case, with all petitioners seeking admission under DU’s ‘single girl child quota.’
