India’s Income Tax Department has made tomorrow i.e. September 15, 2025 as the final date to file Income Tax Return (ITR) for the FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26) for all regular individual taxpayers and non-audit cases. Previously, this was extended from the initial July 31, 2025, due date to give the taxpayers extra time amidst updates and revisions. As of now, there has been no formal announcement regarding any additional extension beyond September 15.

Reasons Behind Extension Requests
Numerous taxpayers and experts have raised demands for the deadline to be extended once again by a minimum of 30-45 days. Some of the reasons cited include technical issues on the e-filing portal, the complexity of the new tax slab changes implemented mid-year, delays in updating TDS credits, and last-minute rush creating problems for taxpayers. Despite such calls, the Income Tax Department still insists on complying with the current deadline to avoid penalties.

Important Filing Dates and Penalties
- September 15, 2025: Filing deadline for ITR of individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and taxpayers not required to undergo audit of their accounts.
- October 31, 2025: Deadline for taxpayers who need an audit.
- November 30, 2025: Deadline for taxpayers that need to file transfer pricing reports.
Missing the September 15 deadline for non-audit taxpayers allows them to file a late return until December 31, 2025, but they need to pay late filing charges (Rs 1,000 in case of income of up to Rs 5 lakh; Rs 5,000 in case of income above Rs 5 lakh) and interest on outstanding tax.
Consequences of Missing the Deadline
Late filing could bring a number of disadvantages to taxpayers:
- Penalties and interest are levied.
- Refunds are delayed because returns are dealt with on a first-come, first-served basis.
- The choice to switch tax regimes or transfer losses is lost.
- Delayed returns preclude detailed examination and can lead to further notices.
- Tax Department’s Advisory to Taxpayers

The Department requests taxpayers not to wait for any extension announcement at the last moment and file their returns as soon as possible to spare unnecessary penalties and delay in refunds. The e-filing website is available 24×7 with helpline support for assistance during the filing process.
Final Taxpayer Recommendations
Taxpayers are advised to:
- File their returns by September 15 to save penalties.
- Prepare required documents to facilitate ease in filing.
- Monitor official Income Tax Department channels for any updates.
- Seek expert help if dealing with complex tax situations.
In conclusion, while calls for an ITR deadline extension continue, the official deadline remains September 15, 2025, and taxpayers are advised to complete filings promptly to stay compliant and avoid penalties.
