The Congress delegation, led by senior party leaders such as KC Venugopal, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Ashok Gehlot, and others, is set to meet the Election Commission (EC) over the unexpected results of the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections. Congress has raised serious concerns regarding the results, which they describe as “totally unexpected” and “against ground reality.” The party has expressed disbelief, claiming that the results contradict what they observed on the ground and are counter-intuitive to voter sentiment.

In the recently concluded elections, the BJP managed to secure 48 out of the 90 assembly seats, whereas Congress won 37. Despite Congress’s anticipation of a major victory, BJP is now poised to form its third successive government in the state. Congress leaders, including Jairam Ramesh and Pawan Khera, have raised alarms about the counting process, specifically questioning the functioning of EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) in certain districts. They also highlighted delays in real-time updates on the Election Commission’s website, which fueled further suspicions.
The Congress delegation aims to bring these grievances directly to the Election Commission, with Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi spearheading the narrative that the results are not aligned with the people’s will. According to Rahul Gandhi, the results are being carefully analyzed, and Congress is collecting evidence from various constituencies that reported counting irregularities. Jairam Ramesh echoed these concerns, stating, “What we have seen in Haryana is a victory for manipulation… and a defeat for transparent democratic processes”.
In response, the Election Commission has pushed back against these claims, labeling Congress’s remarks as “unprecedented” and “unheard of in the rich democratic heritage” of India. The Commission has agreed to meet with the Congress delegation to discuss their concerns and will review the allegations during this meeting.
