A speeding autorickshaw struck a 47-year-old woman and her daughter as they rode their bicycle in Chandigarh’s Industrial Area Phase-1 on Sunday. The police confirmed that the autorickshaw driver was intoxicated at the time.
The victims, identified as Kaushalya (who was the pillion rider) and her daughter Khushi, 19, both residents of Mauli Jagran, were injured in the collision, which occurred around 4 pm when the autorickshaw collided with their bicycle head-on.
Both women were promptly transported to Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32. Kaushalya sustained a rib injury, while her daughter was discharged after receiving medical care.
The police took the autorickshaw driver, Mukesh Kumar, into custody at the scene, and a subsequent medical examination confirmed his intoxication. A case was registered at the Industrial Area police station.
This incident follows a similar one earlier this month, where a pedestrian named Vikram lost his life after being struck by an autorickshaw at Sector 39, Maloya Road, on October 10. In September, another accident involving a speeding autorickshaw occurred at the Sector 16/17 light point on Jan Marg. Two cyclists were hit, and tragically, Dr Lakhwinder Singh, one of the cyclists, succumbed to his injuries on October 1.
