The Commonwealth of Dominica has decided to confer its highest national distinction, the Dominica Award of Honour, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This recognition is in appreciation of his significant contributions to Dominica during the COVID-19 pandemic and his ongoing efforts to strengthen the bond between India and Dominica.

This announcement comes ahead of PM Modi’s upcoming visit to Africa, with Dominica highlighting the award as a gesture of gratitude for his support.

This recognition is the latest addition to PM Modi’s growing collection of international accolades, which now includes over 15 prestigious awards. Among them are the U.S. Government’s Legion of Merit and France’s Grand Cross of the Legion. These honors reflect India’s rising global influence and PM Modi’s ambition for India to play a key role as a “Vishwaguru” or global leader. Comparisons have been drawn to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who also earned recognition and respect worldwide, cultivating personal ties with heads of state. Similarly, PM Modi has built strong relationships with international leaders, including former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

PM Modi’s COVID-19 relief initiatives, such as the distribution of medicines, vaccines, and healthcare support to countries in need, were widely lauded on the global stage, even drawing appreciation from the public in neighboring Pakistan. His foreign policy emphasizes soft power and partnerships with nations across the Global South and Africa, positioning India as an increasingly influential player in international relations.
