With Diwali approaching, several cities have imposed a ban on traditional firecrackers due to declining air quality levels. Instead, governments are permitting the use of environmentally-friendly green crackers.
Here’s everything you need to know about green firecrackers and why they are a better choice than traditional ones:
1) Green crackers are eco-friendly, made from less polluting materials that reduce emissions compared to conventional firecrackers. Their chemical makeup also helps suppress dust particles when ignited.
2) Unlike traditional firecrackers, which contain harmful chemicals like arsenic, lithium, and barium, green crackers are manufactured without these toxic substances.
3) These eco-friendly crackers also contain materials like aluminium, lead, and carbon in reduced quantities, helping to minimize emissions when they are set off.
4) They release water vapor when they burst, preventing dust from rising and reducing air pollution.
5) While traditional firecrackers emit around 160 decibels of sound, green crackers are designed to produce only 110-125 decibels, making them quieter.
6) These eco-friendly crackers were developed in 2019 by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI).
7) They in India are classified into three types:
– SWAS: Safe Water Releaser
– STAR: Safe Thermite Cracker
– SAFAL: Safe Minimal Aluminium
8) They can be identified by a QR code and a CSIR-NEERI-certified green logo on their packaging.
