In a world full of unique wellness trends, one studio in Costa Mesa, California, is taking the concept to new heights—literally and figuratively—with its innovative offering: snake yoga. This unusual practice invites participants to find their inner peace while a snake gracefully slithers across their bodies, creating a truly wild twist on traditional yoga.
Overcoming Fears in a Controlled Environment
LXRYOGA, the studio behind this daring concept, caters specifically to individuals who may have a fear of snakes. The goal is to provide a safe and controlled environment where participants can confront their fears head-on. As Tess Cao, co-owner of LXRYOGA, explains, “Some may say what we offer is a gimmick, like other yogas with animals, but we believe in what we provide.”

Upon arrival, participants select a special stone as a keepsake, each associated with one of the studio’s eight friendly ball pythons, named after various crystals. Participants then randomly draw a crystal to determine their snake partner for the day.
A Unique Experience with Safety in Mind
Before the yoga session begins, participants undergo a briefing on how to interact safely and mindfully with the snakes. The ball pythons are described as “very social and friendly,” and the studio takes great care to ensure the reptiles are calm and stress-free during the classes.

“Whether you want to overcome your fears or just try something unusual, snake yoga at LXRYOGA promises an unforgettable and calming experience,” Cao adds.
Controversy Surrounds the Trend
However, not everyone is thrilled about this unconventional yoga practice. Last month, a video featuring snake yoga, posted by content creator Jen Zhang on Instagram, sparked outrage online. Critics on social media have labeled the practice as animal abuse, raising concerns about the ethical implications of using live snakes in yoga sessions.
Despite the mixed reactions, LXRYOGA remains committed to its mission of providing a unique wellness experience that helps individuals connect with themselves—and perhaps even with their fears—in a new way.
