Leonardo DiCaprio has officially endorsed Kamala Harris for president, sharing his support for the Democratic candidate in a video posted on Instagram Friday.
“Climate change is killing the earth and ruining our economy,” DiCaprio stated in the video. “We need a bold step forward to save our economy, our planet, and ourselves. That’s why I’m voting for Kamala Harris.” Known for his vocal stance on climate issues, DiCaprio has frequently backed Democratic candidates who prioritize environmental action. Early in 2020, he attended a fundraiser for Joe Biden hosted by Sherry Lansing, former head of Paramount Pictures.
In his video and Instagram caption, DiCaprio referenced the recent devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton, highlighting Harris’ commitment to combating climate change. He praised her ambitious plans to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and her efforts to foster a green economy. DiCaprio also pointed out Harris’ role in passing the Inflation Reduction Act, which was approved with her tie-breaking vote as vice president. The landmark climate law, passed with Democratic support alone, addresses key environmental issues and economic initiatives.
DiCaprio additionally criticized former President Donald Trump, accusing him of “denying the facts” and “denying the science” surrounding climate change. He specifically condemned Trump’s withdrawal of the U.S. from the Paris climate accord and his rollback of critical environmental protections.
With the election approaching in less than two weeks, Harris has received endorsements from several prominent figures, including Taylor Swift, Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Chris Rock, and George Clooney. On Thursday night, she held a rally in Atlanta’s suburbs, joined by former President Barack Obama and musician Bruce Springsteen. According to The Associated Press, Beyoncé, whose song “Freedom” has become a campaign anthem for Harris, is expected to attend Harris’ rally in Houston on Friday.
On the Republican side, Donald Trump’s celebrity supporters include Elon Musk, Dennis Quaid, Roseanne Barr, and Kid Rock. In December 2016, following Trump’s election, DiCaprio and representatives from his foundation met with Trump to discuss how environmentally focused jobs could stimulate the economy.
