Dhruv Rathee Criticized for Disclosing Victim’s Name in Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case

YouTuber Dhruv Rathee has come under scrutiny for revealing the name of the victim in the recent Kolkata rape-murder case. Earlier, Rathee faced backlash for deleting a post on X (formerly Twitter) that addressed the horrifying incident.

As reported by the Free Press Journal, Rathee initially shared a post titled “Justice For Nirbhaya 2” on X but later took it down. This led to criticism, with some accusing him of being afraid of the ruling government in West Bengal.

When questioned about why he deleted the post, Rathee explained in a response to an X user, “Because some people pointed out that it was insensitive to call (name hidden) as Nirbhaya 2. I thought over it and felt that they were right.” Despite this, he faced further criticism after he mentioned the victim’s name in a hashtag while discussing the incident on social media. In his post, he expressed his concern about the case, stating, “The rape-murder case in West Bengal is heartbreaking. It exposes the inhumane working conditions for doctors, the lack of their safety, and the miserable state of law and order in West Bengal. Hope CBI does a fast track trial and gets justice (sic),” along with a hashtag containing the victim’s name.

Social media users were quick to call out Rathee for revealing the victim’s identity. Advocate Prashant Umrao reminded him, “When the rape victim is dead or of unsound mind, the name of the victim or her identity should not be disclosed even under the authorisation of the next of kin – #SupremeCourt.” Many others also questioned why he had deleted his previous post.

The tragic rape and murder of the female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital has left the nation in shock. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, is the main suspect in this brutal crime, and reports suggest he has a history of violence against women.
