The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a hefty fine of ₹95 lakh on Air India for operating flights with non-qualified crew members. This penalty comes amid growing scrutiny of airline safety and compliance.
In addition to the major fine on the airline, the DGCA has also levied individual penalties of ₹6 lakh on Air India’s Director of Operations and ₹3 lakh on the Director of Training. The penalties reflect the seriousness of the regulatory breach and aim to enforce accountability at multiple levels within the airline.
The issue came to light following a voluntary report submitted by Air India on July 10, 2024. The report led to a detailed investigation by the DGCA, which found that the airline had been operating flights with crew members who did not meet the necessary qualifications.
This action underscores the DGCA’s commitment to upholding aviation safety standards and ensuring that all personnel involved in flight operations are properly qualified. The penalties aim to reinforce the importance of compliance with aviation regulations and to prevent future lapses in safety protocols.
Air India has yet to comment on the penalties, but the fine represents a significant financial and reputational blow to the airline. The DGCA’s enforcement of such measures highlights ongoing efforts to maintain rigorous safety standards within the aviation industry.
