Congress criticized the BJP on Monday for the violence in Tripura, asserting that democracy is being blatantly undermined in the northeastern state. They alleged that the orchestration of these events is clear under the “double engine” government.
In a series of tweets, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh condemned the situation, stating, “This is a BJP-style assault on the Constitution of India—its principles, values, provisions, and institutions. This is the real ‘Samvidhan Hatya’.”
Ramesh, also the communications in-charge, emphasized, “Democracy is being murdered in broad daylight in Tripura. The orchestration by the self-styled double engine sarkar is beyond any doubt.”
His comments were in response to a post by his party colleague Gitish Chodankar on X, highlighting the violence in Tripura and stating, “Now BJP-sponsored violence in Tripura ahead of Panchayat elections to prevent opposition from filing nominations: Since the announcement of the upcoming Panchayat Elections-2024, BJP-backed miscreants have been conducting house-to-house attacks and threatening loyal Congress workers in various parts of the state to unfairly influence election results in their favor.”
“Those intending to contest for Tripura Congress are being threatened against participating. Just a day after the announcement of Panchayat Election 2024 on July 11, 2024, in Kalyanpur RD Block, Mohanpur RD Block, Satchand RD Block, Tepania RD Block, Dukli RD Block, Salema Block, Bishalgarh Block, Congress workers were attacked, and houses were burnt by BJP miscreants.”
“Dear Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji – Kindly direct your party to Tripura to stop violence and respect democracy, or else Tripura people will punish you like in Manipur,” the Tripura Congress in-charge warned.
