In a historic address to the Guyanese Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced “Democracy first and Humanity first” as the foundation for global development. He explained that democracy fosters inclusion, while humanity ensures decisions benefit all people.

Shared Democratic Values Between India and Guyana

Highlighting the strong democratic traditions of India and Guyana, PM Modi remarked, “Democracy is in our DNA.” He emphasized that both nations have demonstrated democracy is more than governance; it’s a way of life deeply ingrained in their culture and values.

India as the Voice of the Global South

PM Modi underlined India’s growing role as a representative of the global south, advocating for fairness in addressing climate change. “Global south is paying the biggest price for climate change,” he said, urging collective action for sustainable development.

Climate Change: A Call for Action

PM Modi pointed out that while many developed nations grew at the expense of the environment, developing nations like those in the global south now bear the brunt of climate change. He called for a united voice to tackle this crisis.

Strengthening Educational and Youth Ties

Encouraging Guyanese youth to study and innovate in India, PM Modi said, “India will be happy to host the maximum number of students from Guyana.” He invited them to explore India’s robust educational and skill development ecosystem, working alongside Indian scientists and innovators.

A Historic Visit to Strengthen Ties

PM Modi’s visit marked the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in over 50 years. As part of his three-nation tour, he participated in the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit, reinforcing India’s commitment to stronger Caribbean relations.
