Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport is set to reopen its new Terminal 1 on Saturday, August 17. The terminal had been closed temporarily due to a canopy collapse, which led to a suspension of operations.

In a press release dated August 14, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) announced that Terminal 1 will resume operations. Airlines IndiGo and SpiceJet will be relocating their flights to this terminal.

The new Terminal 1 is part of DIAL’s Phase 3A expansion project, which began in 2019. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the terminal in March. The renovation work has since been completed, and the terminal is now ready for use.

According to DIAL’s announcement, SpiceJet will move 13 of its flights to Terminal 1 starting August 17. IndiGo will follow by shifting 34 flights from Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 beginning September 2.

Previously, Terminal 1 exclusively served IndiGo and SpiceJet flights until June 28, when a canopy collapse during heavy rain resulted in one fatality.

The revamped Terminal 1 now features improved facilities, including new signage and on-road markings to assist passengers. Security firm RAXA will deploy guards to help passengers navigate to the departure areas. Additionally, DIAL has introduced a ‘Queue-Buster: Mobile Check-in Service’ to reduce wait times at check-in counters.
