Flight services at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) faced major disruption on Friday morning after a technical glitch hit the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system. The malfunction led to widespread flight delays, causing inconvenience to hundreds of passengers.

ATC Glitch Causes Widespread Delays

According to passengers, airline crews informed them that a technical problem in the ATC system was affecting both arrivals and departures, resulting in delays of over 30 minutes for many flights. Some travellers told IANS that they were advised to remain patient as technical teams worked to fix the issue.

The glitch created temporary congestion at boarding gates, as outgoing flights were held back and arriving aircraft queued for clearance. As per PTI reports, more than 100 flights were delayed during the morning peak hours due to the ATC malfunction.

Delhi Airport Issues Official Statement

In an official advisory, Delhi Airport said, “Due to a technical issue with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system, flight operations at IGIA are experiencing delays. The team is actively working with all stakeholders including DIAL to resolve it at the earliest. Passengers are advised to stay in touch with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused.”

Airlines Warn Passengers About Possible Delays

Following the congestion, airlines including SpiceJet and Air India issued separate advisories on X (formerly Twitter).

SpiceJet wrote, “Due to ATC (Air Traffic Control) congestion at Delhi, all Departures/Arrivals and their consequential flights might get affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status.”

Air India also confirmed that operations across all airlines were being affected by the technical issue, stating, “A technical issue with the ATC system in Delhi is impacting flight operations across all airlines, leading to delays and longer wait times at the airport and onboard aircraft. We regret the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption, which is beyond our control, and appreciate your patience. Our cabin crew and on-ground staff at the airport are extending immediate assistance to reduce passenger inconvenience.”

Similar Glitch Reported Earlier This Week

Friday’s disruption occurred just two days after Delhi Airport reported that operations had returned to normal following a similar technical issue earlier in the week.

On Wednesday, airport authorities had said, “All operations are back to normal and passengers can proceed with their travel plans as usual. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time.”

Earlier in the week, the airport had also admitted to check-in process delays for a few airlines due to a separate technical snag. The operator stated that it was coordinating with all stakeholders to minimize disruptions and restore normal services as quickly as possible.
