New Delhi:
Laying the foundation stone for the first such park on a three-acre plot in Mukhmelpur village in north Delhi’s Burari area, Gupta said the project marks the beginning of a larger green initiative across the capital.
“Delhi was turned into a gas chamber for years, but nobody was concerned to take steps to address pollution in Delhi,” the chief minister said.
She added that her government has been working over the past year to address pollution and that the oxygen parks form a key part of the strategy.
According to Gupta, the parks will feature dense fruit-bearing trees aimed at improving oxygen levels while also providing shelter for birds.
“These parks with dense trees are a requirement of Delhi,” she said.
Officials said the proposed parks are expected to be developed in different parts of the city, especially in densely populated and pollution-prone areas where green cover is limited. The initiative is also aimed at creating small urban forests that can help reduce heat levels during summer and improve local air quality. Environmental experts have repeatedly stressed the need for expanding green spaces in Delhi, which continues to face severe air pollution, particularly during winter months. The government is also expected to involve local communities and resident welfare associations in maintaining the parks and ensuring their long-term sustainability.
