Due to the rising temperatures, special arrangements such as water coolers, pools, and sprinklers have been set up for animals at Delhi’s National Zoological Park. Sanjeet Kumar, an IFS officer and the Director of the park, shared with ANI details of the summer care management plan for the zoo’s animals.

Kumar mentioned the implementation of a proper diet plan along with water pools and sprinkling to ensure the animals’ well-being during the summer. Additionally, he highlighted the availability of medical care facilities for the animals within the zoo premises. Seasonal fruits are also provided to various animals including primates, bears, herbivores, and elephants as part of their diet regimen.

“We are fully prepared with life-saving medicines and emergency services if our animals get sick, he said adding that fortunately till now not a single has faced any heatstroke or sickness. He also said that veterinary doctors are available to take care of animals,” IFS said.

The zoo’s management ensures that animals are released in shifts to minimize their exposure to prolonged heat. Specifically for carnivores, there are twin water pools in both the exhibit and back kraals, with continuous water flow during peak hours. Stagnant water in moats is regularly pumped out, cleaned, disinfected, and refilled.

Sprinklers are installed in all carnivore enclosures, including those for tigers, lions, leopards, jackals, hyenas, wolves, wild dogs, and Indian foxes. Water coolers are placed in holding cells and are regularly checked by day and night keepers. The diet of carnivorous animals is adjusted for summer, while other animals receive ample fruits and liquid diets.

Artificial sheds made of bamboo and straw provide shade for deer to rest, and elephants enjoy water showers using a pressure pump and sand mold. Bears receive fruit ice balls daily. Sidewall curtains protect birds from hot winds, and water is sprinkled on curtains, floors, and rooftops for cooling.
