The Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in New Delhi announced on Tuesday the inauguration of a cutting-edge skin bank facility, the first of its kind within the Armed Forces Medical Services. This groundbreaking initiative aims to transform the treatment of severe burn injuries and other skin-related conditions among service members and their families.
The new skin bank will function as a centralised centre for the collection, processing, storage, and distribution of skin grafts, serving as a vital resource for military medical centres nationwide. Through this facility, the Armed Forces are ensuring access to advanced skin replacement therapies for those who have made sacrifices for the nation.
“The launch of this skin bank demonstrates our steadfast commitment to the health and well-being of our service members,” said Lt Gen Arindam Chatterjee AVSM, VSM DGMS (Army) & Col Comdt. “This facility will not only enhance the quality of care we provide but also bolster our ability to assist those impacted by severe injuries,” added Lt Gen Arindam Chatterjee.
The skin bank will be operated by a team of highly skilled medical professionals, including plastic surgeons, tissue engineers, and specialised technicians, adhering to stringent standards of quality control and safety for the skin grafts’ integrity and reliability.
“This skin bank marks a significant advancement in our ability to address severe burns and complex skin conditions,” stated Lt Gen Ajith Nilakantan, Commandant Army Hospital (R&R). “With a dedicated resource for skin tissue, we can offer our patients the most effective and personalised treatments, improving their prospects for recovery and rehabilitation.”
