Delhi Police urges SC to urgently hear review, cites another crime committed by accused after release: Chawla rape-murder case

The Delhi Police filed a plea wherein seeking a review of the Supreme Court acquittal of the three death row convicts of the gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old girl in Delhi’s Chhawla area in 2012. The bench comprising of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice JB Pardiwala was hearing the present matter. It has been highlighted by the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta the brutality of the crime and has stated that an 18 year old was raped, mutilated, killed.

There were objects inserted in private parts. The Delhi High Court and the trail court awarded the death penalty. The said court acquitted them. We seek for the review. After the review, it was found that one of the accused slit the throat of someone else. They have hardened criminals. Thus, requesting for an open court hearing. Further, he sought for the bench to led by the Chief Justice.

CJI DY Chandrachud and stated that we are going to constitute a bench and I will constitute one with me, Justices Ravindra Bhat, and Bela Trivedi. We will consider the open court request and will talk to my fellow judges. Facts of the Case: An order has been passed by the Supreme Court wherein acquitting the three men accused in the 2012 Chhawla Gang Rape Case in November 2022. Therefore, the three accused were previously being sentenced to death by the Delhi High Court and the trial court.

The said judgement was pronounced by the bench comprising of Chief Justice U. U. Lalit and Justice Ravindra Bhat and Justice Bela M. Trivedi for setting aside the judgment which is passed by the Delhi High Court wherein the court convicted the three men for murder and rape of a 19 year old girl. In the present case, the three persons Rahul, Ravi and Vinod were being accused of abducting the girl while the girl was returning home from her work place on 09.02.2012. Lately, it was being found by the police a mutilated body of the girl on 14th February near Rewari in Haryana with multiple wounds. It was also being found in the autopsy that the girl was being attacked, raped and acid was poured on the eyes of the girl.
