The Delhi High Court in the case Nitu v. Sports Authority of India And Ors., observed and ha issued the notice wherein the court was hearing the petition filed by world boxing champion-Nitu Ghanghas.
The plea moved seeks direction to the respondent-authorities that she be considered for and conferred with Arjuna Award for Outstanding Performance in Sports and Games (2023).
The vacation bench of Delhi High Court was hearing the present matter.
In the present case, the plea was moved by the gold medalist in Commonwealth Games, 2022, wherein it was held at Birmingham as well as in IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship or World Cup, 2023 held at New Delhi, Nitu, a southpaw, hails from Bhiwani district in Haryana.
She was noticed by coach Jagdish Singh, the founder of Bhiwani Boxing Club and former mentor of boxer Vijender Singh.
Therefore, the court observed that Nitu’s first success in the senior category came when she bagged the gold medal in the 48 kg category at Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament, 2022 held in Sofia, Bulgaria.
However, at the age of 23, she is the 6th Indian boxer (male or female) to become a world champion.
The petition moved claims that non-inclusion of her name in the Arjuna Awardee list is unfair, unreasonable, and violative of Article 14 of the Constitution of India.
The counsel, Senior Advocate Mohit Mathur appearing for the Nitu submitted before the court that the representation has already been given in respect of non-inclusion of Nitu’s name in the Arjuna Awardee list.
It has also been stated by the CGSC Anil that the representation would be considered. Accordingly, the court listed the matter for further consideration for January 01, 2024.
