Officials reported that the death toll from the fire at Dayal Market in Delhi’s Alipur rose to 11 on Friday morning. The incident occurred around 5:30 pm, resulting in injuries to four individuals, including a police constable, as stated by Delhi Fire Services Department officials.
The deceased have not been identified yet, and their bodies have been moved to Babu Jagjeevan Ram Hospital. The injured, identified as Jyoti (42), Divya (20), Mohit Solanki (34), and Karambir, a Delhi police constable, are receiving treatment at Raja Harish Chandra Hospital, according to fire department officials.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire, which started on Thursday evening, affected around eight shops in the market and two paint and chemical godowns.
Sumit Bharadwaj, an eyewitness, described the incident, mentioning an explosion around 5:30 pm, prompting people to gather and attempt to extinguish the fire. Approximately 7-8 fire tenders arrived to conduct firefighting operations.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, and concerns are raised by relatives of those working at the paint godown. Sunil Thakur, searching for his brother Anil Thakur, expressed worry, stating that Anil worked at a paint factory, and his phone has been off since 5 pm.
The police have yet to confirm the exact cause of the massive fire, and further details are awaited as the situation develops.
