A Dalit girl who was allegedly gang-raped and set on fire by two men in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit district died on Monday in a Lucknow hospital from her injuries.

After allegedly gang-raping the 16-year-old girl on September 7th, they poured diesel on her and set her on fire in the Madhav Tanda area in an attempt to kill her. She was taken to the hospital with severe burns.

However, the incident was brought to light three days later when a video of the victim recounting her ordeal went viral.

Superintendent of police Dinesh Kumar Prabhu had previously identified the two men as Rajveer, 19, and Tarachand alias Tarun Kumar, 25.

According to the SP, a case was registered against the accused under the Indian Penal Code, the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Schedule Castes/Schedule Tribes Act based on the girl’s family’s complaint.

Yogesh Kumar, a sub-divisional magistrate (Sadar), had recorded the girl’s statement.
