Cyclone Michaung: Tragedy struck Chennai as a private building in Velachery collapsed due to heavy rains, claiming three lives. Rescue operations ensued, supported by Tamil Nadu’s government and NLC company’s efforts to pump out water from the site.
Thirumavalavan, the VCK Chief and MP visited the area to inquire about the situation and offer assistance to the affected families. Heavy rain flooded several Chennai streets, necessitating boat rescue efforts.
Rains have continued to fall in Tamil Nadu, with districts such as Virudhunagar, Pudukkottai, Dindigul, Sivagangai, and Madurai receiving significant rainfall, causing further flooding.
The police department mobilized rescue teams in areas such as Manapakkam and Thuraipakkam to assist affected residents by distributing essentials and providing medical aid, as represented by Additional Commissioner Tr. Prem Anand Sinha, IPS, and DC Mount.
The continuous downpour caused havoc, resulting in six deaths earlier attributed to Cyclone Michaung. Arumbakkam remained waterlogged, impacting transport in the city.
The airport-to-Anna Salai and ECR routes are designated as emergency travel corridors due to flooding on other roads, some with up to 1 foot of water. Traffic closure was enforced on Manjambakkam to Vadaperumbakkam Road due to water discharge from Puzhal Lake.
The Chennai Police reported numerous successful rescues across affected areas, totaling 225 individuals in Santhome, among other locations, with continuous efforts to relocate and support the affected populace.
Additionally, the fire department safely captured a 14-foot-long King Cobra found in Bhagavathipuram village, subsequently handing it over to the forest department.
In light of Cyclone Michaung’s impact, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin requested an immediate interim relief fund of Rs 5060 crores from PM Narendra Modi and urged for a central team to assess the damages. He took a firsthand look at the affected regions and appealed for increased efforts in relief work.
The Meteorological Department’s latest update noted the weakening of the remnants of Cyclone Michaung into a low-pressure area over NE Telangana, S Chhattisgarh, S Interior Odisha, and Coastal AP, indicating a likely further decrease in intensity within the next 12 hours.
