Cyclone Biparjoy advanced towards the Gujarat coast on Wednesday, and parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region received heavy rains and severe gusts.

According to a statement from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), 54 talukas in the districts of Saurashtra and Kutch got more than 10 mm of rain in the 24 hours that ended on Wednesday morning.

Rainfall was heavier in the Devbhumi Dwarka, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, and Junagadh districts. The Khambhaliya taluka of the Devbhumi Dwarka district, which received 121 mm of rain during this time, was followed by Dwarka (92 mm) and Kalyanpur (70 mm), according to the SEOC.

Isolated regions in the districts of Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, and Jamnagar are likely to see extremely heavy rains when the storm approaches the Gujarat coast on June 15, according to a statement from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Cyclone Biparjoy, a very strong cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speeds of 125–135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph, is highly likely to travel between Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan, near to Jakhau port in Gujarat, during the evening of June 15, according to the report.

Accordingly, heavy to extremely heavy rain is also anticipated to fall on several portions of Porbandar, Rajkot, Morbi, Junagadh, and other districts of Saurashtra and North Gujarat on Thursday.

The IMD has also forecast light to moderate rain on Friday, with sporadic areas of heavy to extremely heavy rain over districts in north Gujarat and the neighbouring south Rajasthan.

The IMD predicted wind gusts of up to 85 kmph along and offshore the shores of the Porbandar and Devbhoomi Dwarka districts as of Wednesday afternoon.

They will progressively gain speed Thursday, with gusts of 150 kmph, along and offshore the districts of Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Junagarh, and Morbi.

The IMD predicts that the sea near the beaches of Saurashtra and Kutch will likely be extremely turbulent until the evening of Wednesday and high to phenomenal until the evening of Thursday before reverting to normal.

Gujarat’s coastal districts are prepared for any possible catastrophe from Biporjoy cyclone.

The State Emergency Operation Center’s districts participated in a video conference with the Chief Minister, Shri Bhupendra Patel, on June 11 to assess the situation. Strategies have been prearranged to combat the destruction.

  • For three days, nine ministers have been placed in each coastal district to provide advice to operators on crisis management.
  • Residents of low-lying areas are being relocated to secure locations.
  • Plans are being made with immediate effect in case necessities like electricity, water, or medications are impacted.
  • Order to remove hoardings right away
  • The Chief Minister’s directions to pre-plan crisis management with the least amount of disruption to citizens have been coordinated by central agencies, including the Air Force, Navy, Army, and Coast Guard to give help as needed.

The district administrations have made all necessary preparations to deal with this potential disaster; including securing shelters, keeping boats anchored safely along the coast, stocking up on supplies of medicine, having a quick disposal plan in place for dead animals, and setting up health services so that expectant mothers won’t experience any difficulties giving birth in the event of a storm. The state government has coordinated the assistance of Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and Army if required during this potential disaster and these agencies are also on standby for disaster management.

  • The NDRF has deployed a total of seven teams in Rajkot, Kutch, Morbi, Jamnagar and Dwarka, and three teams are on standby in Vadodara. Additionally, 12 teams of the SDRF have been dispatched and are prepared to go where they are needed.
  • During this review meeting, Chief Secretary Shri Raj Kumar gave advice to the District Collectors and warned them that the storm’s state and trajectory could alter every hour for the following 72 hours.
  • In this regard, the District Collectors are supposed to keep a close eye on the situation, make the best choices based on the local circumstances, and seek additional support by contacting the State Emergency Control Room as needed.
  • Senior secretaries from the departments of revenue, energy, road construction, forestry and environmental protection, ports, science and technology, and animal husbandry participated in this video conference meeting, which was presided over by the chief minister, and they discussed the role of advance planning carried out by their departments.
