India’s top fast bowler, Mohammad Shami, has been excluded from the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, as announced by the BCCI on Monday. Shami, who most recently represented India in the 2023 ODI World Cup, was originally anticipated to return following his absence during the New Zealand series. Nevertheless, the medical team has assessed him as unfit for the current series.
The BCCI noted that although Shami has entirely healed from his right heel surgery, ongoing swelling in his left knee is raising concerns.
“The BCCI Medical Team at the Centre of Excellence has been closely collaborating with Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami on his recovery and rehabilitation following his right heel surgery. Shami has completely healed from this heel injury,” the statement indicated.
Shami made his comeback to domestic cricket, delivering 43 overs for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy against Madhya Pradesh in November. He also took part in all nine matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), where he engaged in additional bowling sessions to enhance his volume and prepare for the Test matches.
However, his left knee exhibited signs of slight swelling as a result of the increased workload from his bowling.
“The swelling is anticipated, due to the increased bowling following an extended break. According to the current medical evaluation, the BCCI Medical Team has concluded that his knee needs additional time for controlled exposure to bowling loads.
“Thus, he has not been considered fit for selection for the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy,” the statement further mentioned.
Shami will continue with specialized strength and conditioning training at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy, concentrating on increasing his bowling loads to meet the requirements of Test cricket. His participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy will rely on the progression of his knee’s condition.
