Covid cases in India cross 42.8 lakh-mark, Maharashtra remains worst-affected

After witnessing a record spike of over 90,000 cases for consecutive days in a row, India saw a drop in Covid-19 numbers and recorded 75,809 cases on Tuesday pushing the total tally in the country to 42,80,442. The death count has risen to 72,775 with 1,133 more fatalities. Meanwhile, 33,23,950 patients have recovered from the disease in the country, pushing the recovery rate to 77.6 per cent. Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state by the pandemic, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Maharashtra recorded 20,131 new Covid-19 cases, 13,234 discharges and 380 deaths in the last twentyfour hours. The total cases in the state increased to 9,43,772 including 6,72,556 recoveries and 27,407 deaths. The active cases now stand at 2,43,446. The national capital recorded 3,609 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to over 1,97,135, while the death toll mounted to 4,618. Nineteen fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours. The total number of tests conducted in the same period was 45,797, adding that the positivity rate in the last 24 hours stood at 7.8 percent in Delhi.

Haryana, in the last twenty-four hours, reported 2,286 new Covid-19 cases and 25 deaths, taking the total number of cases to 81,059 including 854 deaths. There are currently 16,890 active cases in the state. Punjab saw a spike of 1,964 new cases, 67 deaths and 2307 discharges in the last twenty-four hours. The total cases in the state increased to 67,547, including 1990 deaths and 49,327 recoveries.

Uttarakhand recorded 658 new Covid-19 cases and 427 patients recovered in the last twenty-four hours. The total Covid-19 tally in the state is now at 26,094, including 17,473 recoveries and 360 deaths. The active cases now stand at 8,184 in the state. The state of Madhya Pradesh which is reporting more than thousand cases for the last seven days recorded 1,864 new Covid-19 cases and 20 deaths in the last twenty-four hours. Total cases now stand at 77,323 including 1,609 deaths and 17,205 active cases in the state.

Kerala reported 3,026 fresh Covid-19 cases in a single day, taking the total infection count to 92,514 as the toll mounted to 372 with 13 more deaths. This is the second time that the state has reported over 3,000 cases on a single day. Karnataka reported 7,866 new Covid-19 cases and 146 deaths in the last 24 hours. There are 4,12,190 cases in the state now, including 3,08,573 discharges and 96,918 active cases.

In Uttar Pradesh, the Covid-19 deaths rose to 4,047 with 73 more fatalities, while 6,743 fresh cases pushed the state›s infection tally to over 2.78 lakh. Of the 6,743 fresh Covid-19 cases, 853 were reported from Lucknow, 290 from Kanpur and 283 from Prayagraj.

West Bengal reported 3,091 new Covid cases and 57 deaths in the last twenty-four hours, taking total cases to 1,86,956 including 1,60,025 discharges, 23,254 active cases and 3,677 deaths in the state. Jammu and Kashmir witnessed its biggest single-day spike of 1,355 Covid-19 cases, pushing the Union Territory›s infection tally to 45,925, while the death toll from the disease rose to 815 with 14 fatalities in the past 24 hours.
