A couple in Chennai is under investigation after delivering their baby at home, following advice from a WhatsApp group instead of consulting medical professionals. The incident has gained attention from both the police and social media users.
The Role of the WhatsApp Group
Manoharan, 36, and his wife Sukanya, 32, are part of a WhatsApp group called “Home Birth Experiences.” This group has over 1,000 members who share tips and instructions for home deliveries. The couple decided to use this information for the birth of their third child, even though Sukanya was not monitored by a doctor during her pregnancy.
When Sukanya went into labor on November 17, the couple chose to follow the group’s guidance instead of going to the hospital. Manoharan handled the delivery himself.
Complaint and Investigation
After the birth, the Public Health Officer filed a complaint against the couple at the Kundrathur police station. The complaint stated that Manoharan violated medical safety regulations. Police later learned that the couple’s decision was influenced by the WhatsApp group.
Health Officials Intervene
Health officials met with Manoharan to explain the risks of using unverified online advice. They stressed that both Sukanya and the newborn needed proper medical care. The local health officer confirmed that they would receive the necessary medical assistance.
