A 39-year-old police constable, identified as Kailash Eknath Gavli, reportedly died by suicide on Sunday by jumping from the second floor of Nagpada police hospital.
Gavli, who served in the Local Arms department of the Mumbai police, was suspected to be battling depression.
According to an officer, Gavli had been on leave for 89 days and returned to his Worli office on January 12. Upon his return, he was asked to provide a fitness certificate.
In an unfortunate turn of events, Gavli visited the hospital on Sunday to obtain the certificate.
However, instead of proceeding with the formalities, he entered the hospital’s toilet and jumped from a window.
The constable succumbed to head injuries sustained in the fall. Nagpada police have registered a case of accidental death and are currently conducting further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
