The first meeting of the newly constituted National Alliance Committee (NAC) of the Congress party concluded in Delhi on Saturday. Mukul Wasnik, the convenor of NAC, addressed the media after the meeting, highlighting the committee’s objective to decide on a “seat-sharing formula” for potential alliances in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Wasnik emphasized that discussions with state units would precede the formulation of the seat-sharing formula. He stated, “We will first speak to the state units. Soon we will form a seat-sharing formula. There is no deadline set for this. But we will decide as soon as possible.” The NAC, comprising key leaders, was formed earlier in the week to engage in discussions regarding potential alliances with other political parties.
The five-member NAC includes convenor Mukul Wasnik and veteran leaders Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel, Salman Khurshid, and Mohan Prakash. As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections draw closer, the allocation of seats becomes a crucial aspect for the Congress party, particularly in the wake of recent electoral setbacks.
On the subject of the INDIA bloc meeting and seat-sharing, Wasnik mentioned, “INDIA bloc has met several times. Wherever there are the Alliance parties (of the INDIA bloc), we will discuss the seat-sharing formula with our leaders.” The INDIA (Indian National Democratic Alliance) bloc meeting held on December 19 included discussions on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the suspension of MPs from Parliament.
The political landscape is intensifying as the Opposition and the BJP-led central government engage in heightened tensions, primarily driven by the demand for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on the recent Parliament security breach. The Congress party’s efforts to form alliances and strategize seat-sharing become pivotal as the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approach, with just four months remaining.
