Gaddam Prasad Kumar, the Congress MLA from Vikarabad, was on Thursday elected unanimously as Speaker of Telangana Assembly. Kumar’s election was annopunced by pro-tem Speaker Akbaruddin Owaisi.

Soon after Kumar’s election, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka along with Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA KT Rama Rao congratulated him and accompanied him to the Speaker’s chair. This was followed by the other legislators extending their best wishes to the new Speaker.

With Congress enjoying a commanding majority in the 119-member Telangana Assembly, KUmar’s election was certainty after he filed his nomination. CM Reddy, several ministers, BRS leader Rama Rao, AIMIM and CPI MLAs had accompanied Kumar when he had gone to file his nomination.

Apart from the Congress, his candidature was backed by BRS, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Communist Party of India (CPI) but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not support him.

Kumar was a minister during the Congress regime in undivided Andhra Pradesh.
