The Congress High Command is likely to announce a new state president of Gujarat in the coming days. The names of Shaktisinh Gohil, Bharatsinh Solanki, and Arjun Modhwadia from the Congress for the state presidency are being discussed. Porbandar native and former state president Arjun Modhwadia’s name is at the forefront. Hardik Patel has been summoned to Delhi by the Congress High Command for this discussion.

After arriving in Delhi, Patel may present his views to the High Command on the appointment of Congress state president in Gujarat and opposition leader in the Legislative Assembly. He will also discuss with senior leaders the strategy to strengthen the foothold of Congress in Gujarat before the Assembly elections in 2022. Patel is likely to remain the acting president of Gujarat Congress. On the other hand, veteran Congress leader Solanki is currently camped in Delhi.

For a long time now, there has been a heated debate in the Congress over the new state president, opposition leader in the Legislative Assembly and the Gujarat Congress in-charge. Incumbent state president Amit Chavda and opposition leader in the Legislative Assembly Paresh Dhanani resigned from the post but new incumbents have not yet been appointed. On the other hand, after Gujarat Congress in-charge Rajiv Satav’s death, the Congress has suffered a major blow. There is also talk of putting new faces in Gujarat. According to sources, the name of the new president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress is to be announced soon, with Arjun Modhwadia leading the way. Arjun Modhwadia is a senior leader of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress and has previously been the President of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress and MLA from Porbandar. He has also been the opposition leader in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from 2004 to 2007.

Candidates are lobbying for the post of Gujarat Pradesh President as well as the opposition leader in the Assembly. The name of the opposition leader will be announced after the announcement of the name of the president in the coming days.

While the MLAs and leaders elected from the Congress have been merging into the BJP for 8 to 10 years, the list of leaders responsible for a weak Congress in Gujarat after 1995 is very long. Despite the change of seven opposition leaders and nine state presidents during almost two and a half decades, the Congress has not been able to come to power in Gujarat.
