In a strong reaction to the surprising Lok Sabha election results, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation.

In a post on X, Ramesh highlighted the better-than-expected performance of the INDIA bloc as a signal that it was time for Narendra Modi to step down. “He used to pretend that he was extraordinary. Now it has been proved that the outgoing Prime Minister is going to become former. Take moral responsibility and resign. This is the message of this election,” Ramesh wrote.

The Congress general secretary insisted that PM Modi must take moral responsibility for the BJP’s expected loss of seats in the Lok Sabha and resign from his position.

As per the Election Commission of India’s data, the BJP was ahead in 236 seats, while the majority mark in the Lok Sabha stands at 272. Congress was leading in 99 seats, the Samajwadi Party in 37 seats, and the Trinamool Congress in 31 seats. The INDIA bloc is expected to win over 200 seats according to EC data and TV reports.

Despite trailing earlier, PM Modi is currently leading in Varanasi. In the 2024 elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed for a third straight term in power, setting an ambitious target of 400 Lok Sabha seats. Exit polls initially predicted a strong performance for the BJP, with several forecasting that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would comfortably surpass its 2019 tally of 353 seats, and at least three exit polls even suggesting the alliance could cross the 400-mark.

The Congress party has made significant gains from its 52 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, as shown by the latest results.
