Jasbeer Singh (Bunty), the Congress candidate who filed his nomination for the post of Mayor on Saturday, has withdrawn his candidature following the directions of H.S. Lucky, President of Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee.
This decision comes in the wake of a formal alliance between the Aam Aadmi Party and the Indian National Congress in New Delhi to jointly contest the Chandigarh Mayoral elections on January 18, 2024.
According to a press release issued by Rajiv Sharma, spokesperson of Chandigarh Congress, Gurpreet Singh (Gabi) and Nirmala Devi will be the joint candidates of the two parties for the positions of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively.
The Councillors of both parties will cast their votes for them on the day of polling. The Congress spokesperson clarified that the alliance presently applies only to the Union Territory of Chandigarh and is specifically for the Mayoral polls. Ongoing negotiations between the national leaders of both parties for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections are expected to be finalized soon.
Senior Congress leaders Pawan Kumar Bansal, H.S. Lucky, and other activists of the local Congress party expressed unequivocal appreciation for the role of Councillor Jasbeer Singh (Bunty). They expressed hope that the alliance formed in Chandigarh would lead to smooth seat sharing among all parties of the I.N.D.I.A alliance in the future.
